The outreach was a homecoming of sorts for evangelist Will Graham, who was born in nearby Longmont, Colorado, in 1975. “This is where my life began almost 50 years ago. Colorado is in my blood. There’s something special about coming home,” said Graham. “I’m grateful to the churches for inviting me to come home and preach the Gospel.” Graham used the return to the place of his birth to direct people to the hope of Jesus Christ. Headed by Will Graham, the famous evangelist’s grandson, the “celebration” is of a long tradition going back to the 1950s, although Graham’s father called them “festivals” and his grandfather referred to them as “crusades.” The principle has remained the same though — once invited by a local church, the Grahams and the association will come and provide resources to local pastors to assist with outreach and provide infrastructure to ensure that churches are able to reach out to potential future Christians and follow up with them. In Northern Colorado, there were in fact two different churches with no relationship to each other, one in Longmont and one in Boulder, that had independently invited the association to the region. The Celebration of Hope would be held in this small fishing village, beginning Oct. 5 and running through Oct. 9. The final day, as it happens, would fall on the 10th anniversary of Will’s first evangelistic outreach on American soil. That event, the Greater Gaston County Celebration, was held Oct. 9-11, 2006, in Gastonia, North Carolina. Now, a decade later, Will was fielding a series of media calls in the U.K., which offered a unique opportunity to reflect back on his calling as an evangelist. October 6, 2024: Graham: “We’re all sinners. We’ve all broken God’s laws. None of us are exempt. The Bible says there’s a price to pay. It says ‘the wages of sin is death.’ My friends, that’s a steep price. I can’t afford that,” said Graham on Sunday night, as he shared a message based on the parable of the Prodigal Son. “‘But God so loved the world that He gave us His one and only son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.’ That’s the good news! That’s what allows us to go home!
