Where would Jesus stand on transgender issues? A doctor's opinion | Beyond the White Coat
For its 2024 word of the year, Merriam-Webster dictionary chose polarization. Perhaps no topic is more polarizing today than that of transgender issues. They impact politics, law, the practice of medicine, athletic competition, faith and morality. Unfortunately, the current political and cultural climate does not lend itself to thoughtful, civil discussion on almost any issue, certainly not those pertaining to transgender individuals. One side says, “Trans or die!” and asks, “Would you rather have a living daughter or dead son?” The other side calls gender-affirming surgery “permanent body mutilation” and highlights the regret of some individuals who underwent surgical transition and now wish to “detransition.” I write both as a physician who has encountered transgender patients in my practice of emergency and addiction medicine, and as a disciple of Jesus who treated the sexual outcasts of his day with stunning gentleness.
