May 24, 2023: LaCroix International: Making Thomas Aquinas a saint who is accessible to all
Can Saint Thomas Aquinas, the great medieval Dominican theologian and master of the scholastic philosophy that's been studied by generations of Catholic priests, still speak to everyday people of our own times?
This is the challenge that the Dominican Friars of the Toulouse Province in Southern France are taking up as they prepare to celebrate the three jubilees of the "Angelic Doctor" of the course of the next three years: the 700th anniversary of his canonization (1323), the 750th anniversary of his death (1274), and the 800th anniversary of his birth (1225).
The Dominicans and the city of Toulouse, which owns the Convent of the Jacobins where St. Thomas once lived, joined together this past January to begin organizing events to honor the great 13th century theologian. The former Dominican convent, which is sometimes considered the motherhouse of the Order of Preachers, will host a multimedia reconstruction of Thomas Aquinas' life and work.

Nov 11, 2022: Aleteia: Former atheist says Thomas Aquinas and a dose of humility led him to the Catholic faith
I wanted to believe in God, but didn’t think I could honestly do so, until I came across the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologica. There I found that the arguments of atheists had been soundly routed more than 700 years ago, and were a part of Church teaching, though I never had a clue.
Since I came back to the Church in 2004 I’ve immersed myself in the wisdom of Thomas Aquinas, who wrote about everything – including the vital importance of humility. It encouraged me to face up to the fact that I had been so wrong about something so important for a quarter of a century.

Jan 19, 2022: The Conversation: What 13th-century Christian theologian Thomas Aquinas can teach us about hope in times of despair
As a scholar who researches democratic virtues, I have spent time with the work of Thomas Aquinas, a Dominican monk who lived in the 13th century. Aquinas’ words are relevant to the times in which we find ourselves. Above all, he shows what it means to hope.

It this by these strong words that St. Thomas Aquinas gives us an appreciation of the grandeur of the grace of the divine maternity.

Presumption denies the difficulty of the goal, but also the responsibility of the individual in making it happen, while despair denies the fact that the goal, despite its arduousness, is yet possible. Hope is the mean because it requires people to be both clear and conscientious about what they are up against, and what they are striving to achieve. |
