Psalm 72

​Psalm 72:1-2:
  Endow the king with your justice, O God,
    the royal son with your righteousness.
2 May he judge your people in righteousness,
    your afflicted ones with justice.

​Psalm 72:3:
May the mountains bring prosperity to the people,
    the hills the fruit of righteousness.

​Psalm 72:4:
May he defend the afflicted among the people
    and save the children of the needy;

It is not enough merely to rescue the weak and needy. The crooks who prey on them need to be put down, both because that restores the proper structures of right and wrong in the world and because it removes the possibility of these particular oppressors acting in the same way again. The verb (dākāʾ piel) thus, on one hand, implies that the king must treat these sharp operators the way they have treated others (cf. 94:5) and, on the other, that he must render them totally incapable of acting that way again, as God once did Rahab (89:10 [11]).     as long as the moon, through all generations.
6 May he be like rain falling on a mown field,
    like showers watering the earth.
7 In his days may the righteous flourish
    and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

Psalm 72:19:
And blessed be His glorious name forever;
And may the whole earth be filled with His glory.
