Psalm 133
Psalm 133:1-3:
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Running down on the beard, The beard of Aaron, Running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing— Life forevermore. |
Man is defined in scripture as a person created in God’s image and unique to his responsibility and calling. Man is man, neither in isolation nor in reduction, but in God, and in community under God. It is impossible for a Christian to regard man except as God’s creature, called to serve God. This call to serve God involves life in God’s Kingdom or community, and we are told that there is a blessing and an anointing for life in community. The Spirits blessings thrive so much more richly when brotherly unity prevails; it is so much more difficult to enjoy these blessings when discord tears men apart and sets them at variance with one another.
There is a reference to Mount Hermon, as well as to the mountains of Zion. In Deut 5:48, Mount Hermon is made synonymous with Mount Zion, so that the dew of Mount Hermon is the blessing of thew Holy Spirit (of the Kingdom of God, the true Zion of God), upon the covenant land and people, the mountains of Zion. |
