SBC Executive Committee member once again criticized for sexually crude social media posts
While Executive Committee leadership might agree with that necessity, it isn’t so easy, according to Mike Keahbone, an Oklahoma pastor who also serves on the latest iteration of the SBC’s sexual abuse response task force. Keahbone tweeted: “As a member of the @SBCExecComm I am aware of the inappropriate tweets made by one of our members. Our leadership is aware and is currently walking through the biblical process of confronting a brother. Organizationally, our bylaws only allow removal from the board by the messengers at the annual meeting. Our next meeting is in June. Our board has the option of censuring or issuing a reprimand of the offending action. This will come after the biblical process has finished its course. There is no debate: the comments by our member were awful and will not be tolerated.”

Interfaith Protest Confronts Christians United for Israel SummitOn Tuesday morning, a group of pastors, rabbis, and seminary students blocked traffic near the Gaylord, forcing two buses filled with CUFI attendees to a standstill. “I’m here because Jesus spent his life and death fighting empires of supremacy and domination and building up a world where all of us can be free,” the Rev. Liz Kearny, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) minister, said while protesting in the street. “Today that means blocking Christian Zionists from lobbying my lawmakers to fuel death and genocide.” CUFI attendees were eventually escorted by police to other buses nearby, and the protest dissipated without arrests. The protests represented a culmination of months of anti-war activism, with participants from Christians for a Free Palestine, Christians for Ceasefire, Mennonite Action, If Not Now, Jewish Voice for Peace, Rabbis for Ceasefire, Hindus for Human Rights and Muslim Alliance for Sexual and Gender Diversity working together.

Some patriarchal husbands today quote Eph 5:22 (“Wives, submit to your husbands”) out of context, much the way slaveholders quoted Eph 6:5. But in Greek, there is no verb in 5:22; it simply says, “Wives, to your husbands. . . .” Of course, Paul is not saying, “Wives, just do to your husbands whatever you want.” Greek grammar presumes that we will carry over the verb from the preceding verse, and that verb is “submit.” But because the verb is carried over from 5:21, it cannot mean something different than it meant in 5:21. The wife’s submission is merely an example of mutual submission, as is the husband sacrificing his life for his wife.
Some object, “But submission is explicit only for the wife!” The command to love, however, is explicit only for the husband (5:25), yet we understand that all Christians should love each another (5:2). Likewise, all Christians should submit to one another (5:21). Although Paul is not trying to cover every circumstance, he offers us a general principle for how we should live: looking out for one another’s interests, listening to one another, loving others more than ourselves. On March 23, 2022, TBN launched Centerpoint, a 30-minute nightly news program produced by former Newsmax CEO Michael Clemente and initially anchored by ex-Fox correspondent Doug McKelway. According to Axios, the network claimed the “programming isn't meant to be politically biased, but will lean into Christian values.” The anchor lineup has shifted multiple times featuring various Christian voices such as Pastor Allen Jackson and former politician Rob Astorino, but recently TBN successfully poached yet another Newsmax expat, Lyndsay Keith.

However far a pastor falls, God does not cast off anyone who comes to Him for help. As long as there is life, there is hope. As with man’s first sin, God did not and does not absent Himself from our ruin. He goes Himself to repair what we destroy. “They shall know that I am the Lord,” says God at the end of Ezekiel 34, “when I break the bars of their yoke, and deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them” (34:27). He is speaking to the abused and ill-treated sheep, of course, but at the very end it may be hoped that even the wicked shepherds might repent and be caught up in a great and merciful salvation. While it is wrong to restore a fallen pastor to his office, every effort must be made to restore him to Christ and the church as a forgiven sinner. Those guilty of the most vile sins have the greatest reason to call on the name of Jesus, to cling to the cross, and to trust the promise of salvation so that, in the end, as God promises in Ezekiel, “they shall know that I am the Lord their God with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Lord God. Evangelical Politics and the American Spirit President Donald Trump and MAGA evangelicals are committing murder-suicide. They are attempting to kill liberalism and democracy, but don’t know they are also slaying evangelical faith in an act of mass self-harm. There will be no cyanide-laced cups of Kool-Aid, but rather a slow fall from grace. MAGA Evangelicals fail to understand that democracy is never a finished product. What makes democracy flourish consists of contingencies, compromises, ambiguities, endless negotiations, and questions — all antithetical to evangelical modes of thought. Evangelicals, impatient for control, obsessed with order, obedience, and conformity, can’t grasp the challenge of democracy. These evangelicals are dismantling democracy piece by piece. Much of the damage occurs in the silent complicity of MAGA with every anti-democracy statement or action by President Trump and his team. If the death of democracy is required for conservatives to destroy a liberal, plural, and diverse culture, conservatives will take the deal.
