I Corinthians 6
I Corinthians 6:1:
"Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before the saints?" |
There are two things characteristic of a temple. First, it is sacred as a dwelling place of God, and therefore cannot be profaned with impurity. Second, the proprietorship of a temple is not in man, but in God. Both these things are true of the believers body. It is a temple because the Holy Ghost dwells in it; and because it is not his own. It belongs to God. As it is a temple of the Holy Ghost, it cannot be profaned without incurring great and peculiar guilt. And as it belongs in a peculiar sense to God, it is not at our own disposal. It can only be used for the purpose for which it was designed.
Hence, the training a child in the way that he should go is to aid the child in finding the purpose for which he was created, and not to foist upon him goals which we personally think he should be. He will not be a carbon copy of anything, only a real physical human being created for Gods pleasure and purpose. |
For supposing you had a daughter, and in extreme madness had let her out to a procurer for hire, and made her live a harlot’s life, and then a king’s son were to pass by, and free her from that slavery, and join her in marriage to himself; you could have no power thenceforth to bring her into the brothel. For you gave her up once for all, and sold her. Such as this is our case also. We let out our own flesh for hire unto the Devil, that grievous procurer: Christ saw and set it free, and withdrew it from that evil tyranny; it is not then ours any more but His who delivered it. If you be willing to use it as a King’s bride, there is none to hinder; but if you bring it where it was before, you will suffer just what they ought who are guilty of such outrages. Wherefore you should rather adorn instead of disgracing it. For you have no authority over the flesh in the wicked lusts, but in those things alone which God may enjoin. Let the thought enter your mind at least from what great outrage God hath delivered it. For in truth never did any harlot expose herself so shamefully as our nature before this. For robberies, murders, and every wicked thought entered in and lay with the soul, and for a small and vulgar hire, the present pleasure. For the soul, being mixed up with all wicked devices and deeds, reaped this reward and no other.

I Corinthians 6:2-6:
2 Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world will be judged by you, are you unworthy to judge the smallest matters?
3 Do you not know that we shall judge angels? How much more, things that pertain to this life?
4 If then you have judgments concerning things pertaining to this life, do you appoint those who are least esteemed by the church to judge?
5 I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren?
6 But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers!

I Corinthians 6:8:
Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren! |
Paul suggests that it is right at times to receive the wrong rather than go into a lawsuit. “Who, me?” is the way many Christians react to accepting loss. Why not allow yourselves to suffer personal loss rather than allowing the testimony of the church to undergo a spiritual loss? The Greek places emphasis upon “you” and on “brethren.” Christians were in the process of defrauding one another. Not only did the Corinthian church refuse to take the wrong, but they were also inflicting wrong upon fellow Christians. [SOURCE: Verse By Verse Commentary]
What God is referring to in these verses is the pettiness of these lawsuits and attitudes that hinder us from receiving God’s justice. Some of these involve the courts and some result in damaging relationships and stirring up unnecessary trauma. |
I Corinthians 6:9-10:
Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. |
We live in a very dark world where rumors abound. Gossip abounds. Slander abounds. Even in the “Christian” community (so-called), tragically.
Slander is a serious sin, and according to Paul, slanderers will be barred from the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). -Frank Viola |

Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” – 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
-sexually immoral
- idolaters
-adulterers
-men who practice homosexuality
-thieves
-greedy
-drunkards
-revilers
-swindlers
This list of things Paul said would not inherit the kingdom of God does not place one sin as being worse than another one. First, I am not endorsing any of these things. I am approaching this with a renewed perspective that if a political authority condemns one through attempts to legislate morality he or they have not created a more "godly" society or furthered a theocratic society because such an effort under the guise of "Christianity" would be far more reaching.
"Homosexuality" (again, I am not endorsing) kind of seems like an easy target when there are 8 other things that are on Paul's list that would be required to have the same attention if any of them are addressed in any legislative process which wishes to create a theocratic government.

I Corinthians 6:9-11:
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,
10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

I Corinthians 6:12:
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any |
The body must be servant. Never master. We should not be brought under the power of anything. We are to exercise dominion, not bring ourselves under bondage to the sin from which we have been redeemed. No dominion is possible by slaves. We thus cannot defend indulgences on the grounds that they are not sinful if we become slaves to them.

I Corinthians 6:14-17:
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
14 And God hath both raised up the Lord, and will also raise up us by his own power.
15 Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make them the members of an harlot? God forbid.
