Eric Metaxas (born 1963) is a Christian author known for his works on faith, culture, and current events. He is a vocal advocate for religious freedom and has written extensively on Christianity, often emphasizing a "religionless Christianity" that focuses on a living, active faith that impacts all aspects of life. While raised Greek Orthodox, he attends Calvary-St. George's Episcopal Church and has spoken at Times Square Church, describing himself as a "Mere Christian" in the tradition of C.S. Lewis, according to Wikipedia. Metaxas's concept of "religionless Christianity" draws inspiration from Dietrich Bonhoeffer and emphasizes a faith that is not just ritualistic but actively lived out and transformative, impacting every aspect of life. He often calls on Christians to engage in the world, not just practice their faith passively, but to live it out heroically and joyfully. Metaxas is a strong advocate for religious freedom, having testified before Congress on the rise of anti-Semitism and spoken at events like CPAC on the topic. He believes that a vibrant Christian culture can emerge from a revitalized faith, a "new birth of freedom," according to his book. Metaxas's books, such as "Miracles" and "Letter to the American Church," have been New York Times bestsellers and have been translated into multiple languages.

Eric Metaxas' Embarrassingly Cultish Defense Of Trump Over The Epstein Files The MAGA movement is in disarray as President Donald Trump continues to defend his administration's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case while many of his right-wing supporters are growing increasingly outraged about what they see as cover up. Since then, things have only gotten worse as Trump is now lashing out at his own supporters for having "bought into this ‘bullshit,’ hook, line, and sinker." Religious-right broadcaster and full-blown Trump cultist Eric Metaxas waded into the maelstrom on his radio program the other day, lamenting that a demonic "spirit of division" is dividing the MAGA movement and urging everyone to trust Trump because his presidency has been "God's mercy to America." Among Metaxas’ fantastic claims:
Metaxas’ latest book and documentary, Letter to the American Church, says: “It’s up to believers to speak up for what is right and good and true.” But in his legal deposition, Metaxas acknowledged he did nothing to verify the truth of any of the false claims he broadcast about Coomer, who was forced to spend months in hiding. Eric Metaxas “It is the job of the church to speak the truth,” author, speaker and radio host Eric Metaxas told TBN. But under oath, Metaxas admitted that he doesn’t verify the truth of allegations aired on his show. Metaxas went after Dominion’s Eric Coomer on the Nov. 24, 2020 edition of the Eric Metaxas Show, carried on Salem Broadcasting. In lengthy rants, Metaxas called Coomer “evil” and “Satanic,” comparing him to the Unabomber: THERE’S SOME PEOPLE THAT THEY’RE LEARNING OR RATHER THEIR BRAINS CAN REALLY, THEY’LL FLIRT WITH INSANITY AND VIOLENCE AND IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU’RE DEALING WITH SOMEBODY WHO AT LEAST BEGINS TO FALL INTO THAT CATEGORY…TO HAVE A MAN WITH THIS KIND OF POWER, THE DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY AND SECURITY AT DOMINION, HUGE, POWERFUL INTERNATIONAL COMPANY. THIS IS BIG NEWS. In his deposition, a much quieter Metaxas admitted he had conducted zero fact-checking on his claims: I’M KIND OF A FLY-BY-THE-SEAT-OF-MY-PANTS GUY…WE DON’T HAVE THE BUDGET, BANDWIDTH OR TIME TO DO ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I DON’T SEE THAT AS MY JOB…I AM USUALLY TAKING MY GUEST AT THEIR WORD… IF I EVER THOUGHT ANYONE WERE BLOWING SMOKE, ESPECIALLY ON AN ISSUE THIS IMPORTANT, I THINK I WOULD ASK THEM SOME HARD QUESTIONS. “I’m not playing the role of a journalist,” Metaxas testified. You might also have noticed the many warnings about demons and spiritual battle on the campaign trail. In the runoff for the Georgia Senate, which he lost by a narrow margin, Herschel Walker—he of the vampires and werewolves—alerted us that the nation is entangled in “spiritual battle” and offered himself as a “warrior for God.” On Eric Metaxas’s radio show, where he interviews conservative politicians and cultural figures, repeat guest Roger Stone told Metaxas that a “demonic portal” had opened above the White House. At an Idaho stop on Mike Flynn’s ReAwaken America tour in September—a traveling road show of conspiracists, candidates for political office, and religious zealots—the Pentecostal pastor Mark Burns called out to the cheering crowd, “I’ve come here to declare war on every demonic, demon-possessed Democrat that comes from the gates of hell.” Sean Feucht, a preacher known for hosting large-scale public evangelism events and a repeat guest on the ReAwaken America tour circuit, cast Democratic initiatives as “schemes of the devil in the political realm.” Oct 22, 2022: CBN: Approaching the Tipping Point: Eric Metaxas' Urgent Wake Up Call to the American Church

December 5, 2024: Joel Looper at First Things wrote: This “history-distorting” depiction of Bonhoeffer prompted eighty-six members of the Bonhoeffer family to write an open letter bemoaning the “tasteless trivialization” of their forebear’s legacy. Members of the International Bonhoeffer Society have likewise spoken out against the film. Even the film’s cast members have publicly repudiated “misuses” of their work and Bonhoeffer’s theology. Metaxas imprudently responded to the Bonhoeffer family’s letter by smearing them as “guaranteed pro-Hamas lunatics” and “Jew-hating lunatics.” The movie’s subtitle echoes his biography’s, but Komarnicki made no direct use of Metaxas’s work. It is filled with tradition and culture and they had much to be proud of, but that sometimes leads to pridefulness. Many Germans were consistent churchgoers but somehow missed what it was all about – merely going through the motions. At this point the church can no longer be the church.....God cannot use us if we do not have His joy. If that is true in your life, then I will pray in the name of Jesus it is restored because your colleagues see whether you have that joy or not. Your neighbors, your enemies see that.....I believe the Holy Spirit is calling the Church to wake up because we are sleeping. You (Christians) must reconnect with me (God) in some way because we cannot possibly be the Church unless we repent and have the child-like joy in us restored. To whom much is given, of them much is required, and we as religious professionals have a larger responsibility to share this message." --Eric Metaxas to Religious Broadcasters; March 2013

August 14, 2021:
I have a book by Eric Metaxas that he wrote about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Probably one of the better books about him. Bonhoeffer stood up and called out the church for their lack of action against Hitler and for allowing him such a strong foothold. Bonhoeffer fought against Hitler and Fascism, and was ultimately hanged for it.
The irony of Metaxas right now is that he has spewed all kind of "prophetic" nonsense about Trump and how he was going to be re-elected and is now telling people to not take the vaccine. I am amazed at how far people fall sometimes but it's as though Metaxas never even read his own book.
Metaxas does make the claim that Trump is not a Christian Nationalist...which is true. Trump would have to be a Christian first to be that. But "Make America Great Again" is all about Nationalism....and the reason the white supremacists and other racist or fascist nationalists also support Trump.

And like Colson, Metaxas took to the Christian conference circuit, speaking on the issues that were near and dear to Colson’s interests.
