Deuteronomy 18
DEUTERONOMY 18:1:
THE LEVITICAL PRIESTS—INDEED, THE WHOLE TRIBE OF LEVI—ARE TO HAVE NO ALLOTMENT OR INHERITANCE WITH ISRAEL. THEY SHALL LIVE ON THE FOOD OFFERINGS PRESENTED TO THE LORD, FOR THAT IS THEIR INHERITANCE. |
The meat offerings and whatsoever of the sin offerings and peace offerings which were the Lord's. The flesh of the offerings which belonged to the priests was called fire offerings, after part of it was consumed by fire. All these, with other things, were given, as the Targum of Jonathan expresses it, for their inheritance, in lieu of their having none in the land of Canaan. - Bible Study Tools

DEUTERONOMY 18:2-8:
2 They shall have no inheritance among their fellow Israelites; the Lord is their inheritance, as he promised them.
3 This is the share due the priests from the people who sacrifice a bull or a sheep: the shoulder, the internal organs and the meat from the head.
4 You are to give them the firstfruits of your grain, new wine and olive oil, and the first wool from the shearing of your sheep,
5 for the Lord your God has chosen them and their descendants out of all your tribes to stand and minister in the Lord’s name always.
6 If a Levite moves from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living, and comes in all earnestness to the place the Lord will choose,
7 he may minister in the name of the Lord his God like all his fellow Levites who serve there in the presence of the Lord.
8 He is to share equally in their benefits, even though he has received money from the sale of family possessions.

Deuteronomy 18:10-12:
There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, |

Deuteronomy 18:13:
Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God. |
The law begins by banning certain forms of idolatry which are unlawful means of communication with the unseen world. No trick or magic, nor any kind of ritual can coerce God. Instead of turning to these "abominations" we are instructed "to be perfect" by turning to the One who is perfect.

DEUTERONOMY 18:18:
I WILL RAISE UP FOR THEM A PROPHET LIKE YOU FROM AMONG THEIR BRETHREN, AND WILL PUT MY WORDS IN HIS MOUTH, AND HE SHALL SPEAK TO THEM ALL THAT I COMMAND HIM. |
The Biblical doctrine of the true purpose and function of the prophets and their manner of delivering the message is clearly set forth in the Lord's words to Moses. Jehovah would speak not so much to the prophets as He would through them, but no others. They were to speak precisely the words given to them, but no others. "I have put my words in thy mouth," the Lord said to Jeremiah in appointing him a prophet to the nations (Jer 1:9). Identically the same words were spoken to Isaiah (51:16; 59:21), and the formula, "Thus saith Jehovah," is repeated some eighty times in the book of Isaiah alone. Even the false prophet Balaam could speak only that which Jehovah gave him to speak--"And the angel of Jehovah said unto Balaam, Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak" (Nu 22:35; 23:5, 12, 16). In many Old Testament passages it is nothing other than a process of "dictation" which is described, although we are not told what the method was by which this dictation was accomplished. In others we are simply given to understand that Jehovah spoke through chosen men as His organs, were His words and were distinctly superhuman product. The uniform teaching of the Old Testament is that the prophets spoke when, and only when, the word of Jehovah came to them: Hosea 1:1; Amos 1:3; Micah 1:1; Malachi 1:1, etc
The characteristic word for prophet is nabhi, "spokesman," is not merely spokesman in general, but by way of eminence, that is, God's spokesman, In no case does the prophet presume to speak on his own authority. in the first place is not of his own choosing, but is a response to a call from God., oftentimes a call which was obeyed only with reluctance; and he speaks or forbears to speak as the Lord gives him utterance. --Loraine Boettner "Studies in Theology" p17-18 |
