Don Carson’s Vision and Legacy
Don Carson is well known for his many academic and popular books, his decades-long tenure at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School where he’s now emeritus professor of New Testament, and his influential work as the founding president of The Gospel Coalition. He has been called “one of the last great Renaissance men in evangelical biblical scholarship.” His election as the 73rd president of the Evangelical Theological Society and the launch of TGC’s Carson Center for Theological Renewal reflect his influence as an evangelical scholar and leader. Sinner is a perfectly good word because it speaks to the truth of our fallen states before God. We are not simply wayward, mixed up, hankering for the good life but missing it. We are born in a desperate condition of being sinful with a bent toward the same. There is no one who has the “right” to be free from God’s wrath. If you escape His wrath, it is His choice. The word “glory” (doxa) is used in the New Testament with two distinct meanings. It means (1)reputation, or (2) brightness, especially the brightness or splendor which radiates from the presence of God. The second must be the meaning here. It is the majesty or goodness or God as manifested to men. Jesus Justified: God reckons, or pronounces, or treats as righteous the ungodly who has no righteousness of his own to show. It is faith that is reckoned for righteousness; faith in Christ is accepted instead of personal merit gained by good works. --DA Carson
1. Beware of pride. There is always a great spiritual danger in thinking that if in some area we have satisfied a specific, concrete demand we have done everything that God requires. Ten percent is a lot of money to some folks; to others it’s not very much. Isn’t that one of the lessons to be learned from Jesus’ comments about the widow’s mite? To suppose that God demands 10 percent—and nothing more—can itself foster a remarkably independent and idolatrous attitude: “This bit is for God, and the rest is mine by right.” Likewise, if you choose to give more than 10 percent, you may become inebriated from the contemplation of your own generosity.
2. Remember why you’re giving. A strictly legal perspective on giving soon runs into a plethora of complicated debates. Is this 10 percent of gross income or of net? How does this play out in a country where a progressive income-tax system rises to 90 percent of in come? If we choose to tithe from our net income, are we talking “take-home pay” only, or does it include what is withheld for medical insurance and retirement benefits?
It would be easy to list such questions for a page or two without ever asking, “How can I manage my affairs so that I can give more?” That is surely a better question than “What’s the correct interpretation so that I can do whatever’s required and then get on with my life?”
Christians will want to acknowledge with gratitude that they are mere stewards of all that they “possess.” Moreover, New Testament ethics turn not so much on legal prescription as on lives joyfully submitted to God.
This is why the most penetrating New Testament passage on giving is 2 Cor. 8-9. Under severe trial, the Corinthians’ “overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity” (8:2). Even so, they first gave themselves to the Lord (8:5). --DA Carson; Are Christian Required to tithe? 11/15/99

Thinking differently from the “world” has been part of the Christian’s responsibility and agenda from the beginning. The language Paul uses intimates that this independence of thought will not be easy. The assumption seems to be that the world has its own patterns, its own structured arguments, its own value systems. Because we Christians live in the world, the “default” reality is that we are likely to be shaped by these patterns, structures, and values, unless we consciously discern how and where they stand over against the gospel and all its entailments, and adopt radically different thinking. More: our response must not only be defensive (Rom. 12:2), but offensive, aiming to “demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God,” aiming to “take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). . . . If we are to be transformed by the renewing of our mind, then we must be reading the Scriptures perennially, seeking to think God’s thoughts after him, focusing on the gospel of God and pondering its implications in every domain of life.
Some studies have shown that Christians spend about five times more mission dollars on issues related to poverty than they do on evangelism and church planting. At one time, “holistic ministry” was an expression intended to move Christians beyond proclamation to include deeds of mercy. Increasingly, however, “holistic ministry” refers to deeds of mercy without any proclamation of the gospel—and that is not holistic. It is not even halfistic, since the deeds of mercy are not the gospel: they are entailments of the gospel. Although I know many Christians who happily combine fidelity to the gospel, evangelism, church planting, and energetic service to the needy, and although I know some who call themselves Christians who formally espouse the gospel but who live out few of its entailments, I also know Christians who, in the name of a “holistic” gospel, focus all their energy on presence, wells in the Sahel, fighting disease, and distributing food to the poor, but who never, or only very rarely, articulate the gospel, preach the gospel, announce the gospel, to anyone. Judging by the distribution of American mission dollars, the biggest hole in our gospel is the gospel itself.

“To accept that a different or opposing position exists and deserves the right to exist is one thing; to accept the position itself means that one is no longer opposing it. The new tolerance suggests that actually accepting another’s position means believing that position to be true, or at least as true as your own....We move from allowing the free expression of contrary opinions to the acceptance of all opinions; we move from permitting the articulation of beliefs and claims with which we do not agree to asserting that all beliefs and claims are equally valid. Thus we slide from the old tolerance to the new.” --DA Carson
Nov 19, 2022: Denny Burk: What Happened at the Rocky Mountain ETS?
The first time I heard D. A. Carson speak in person was way back in 1998 when I was a graduate student at Dallas Theological Seminary. He delivered four lectures which eventually became the book The Difficult Doctrine of the Love of God (Crossway, 2000). I will never forget those lectures. It was a detailed exposition of biblical texts from John’s Gospel, and I was absolutely transfixed by the power and profundity of what I was hearing. Fast-forward now almost 25 years later to Dr. Carson’s presential address in Denver. It was the same experience all over again. A powerful and profound exposition of God’s holiness from Isaiah 6 and Revelation 4:8. The address will eventually be published in The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society, but I encourage you to get the audio if you can when it is released. |

"The Exodus of God’s people out of Egypt is “the greatest redemptive event in the Old Testament...It is simultaneously the escape of the Israelites from Egypt, and the events surrounding the exodus, like entering the Promised Land...It is the greatest redemptive event in the Old Testament to which subsequent revelation points to again and again and again...The ultimate Israel is Jesus himself...We are truly Christians if we hold our beginning faith steadfastly to the end, which is precisely what so many Israelites did not do.” --DA Carson
