“It’s … a misrepresentation of what the Bible presents about creation and in that, it distorts the divine order that is a part of that creation story by really reframing the way the story is presented. And so it’s revisionism as opposed to really substantively reflecting what the Bible is saying. It fits PETA’s mission, but it doesn’t reflect what the Bible says about the creation.”

A New Day for Apologetics
Despite all the recent attacks on faith or, perhaps, because of them these are definitely the best of times for Christian apologists such as Lee Strobel, William Lane Craig, Ben Witherington III, Darrell Bock, and J. P. Moreland. They are making documentaries, writing books, giving media interviews, attending debates and conferences, and presenting the public with what they say is a growing mountain of scientific and archaeological evidence documenting the truth of Christianity. “There has been a resurgence in Christian apologetics as a direct result of the challenges Christianity has faced in the form of militant atheism in college classrooms, on the Internet, and in TV documentaries and best-selling books,” says Strobel, former legal editor of the Chicago Tribune and most recently the author of The Case for the Real Jesus: A Journalist Investigates Current Attacks on the Identity of Christ. New Books Challenge Christian Nationalism
Books from religion publishers on the roots and rise of Christian nationalism gained momentum during the first Trump administration. Now, the authors of three forthcoming titles warn that the movement is growing more powerful and urge readers to push back. Their books assert that Christian nationalism is taking shape as a coordinated political strategy, in which Christian beliefs are increasingly enshrined into U.S. law. Jessica Miller Kelley, executive editor at Westminster John Knox Press, says the publisher had been looking for unique perspectives on rising levels of Christian nationalism when she came across a manuscript about “a force in the movement that we and so many other concerned people had simply been unaware of.” Slated for publication on September 30, The Seven Mountains Mandate: Exposing the Dangerous Plan to Christianize America and Destroy Democracy by Matthew Boedy introduces readers to a years-long Christian nationalist effort to shape and control seven “mountains,” or facets of American society: education, politics, religion, media, entertainment, family, and business.

General Assembly committee publishes a resource to help Presbyterians confront Christian nationalism
The General Assembly Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Relations has a recent resource to help Presbyterians learn more about confronting Christian nationalism. The two-page document includes answers to frequently-asked questions and “God of All,” a liturgical witness against Christian nationalism by Dr. Whitney Wilkinson Ameche and the Rev. Dr. Jacob Bolton. The authors acknowledge the influence of the writer and poet Cole Arthur Riley. “The Presbyterian Church has had long-standing interfaith dialogue partners and it is incumbent upon us to stand with them when they are under assault, directly or indirectly, by Christian nationalism,” committee members said. “Recent events such as the second Trump Muslim ban and the antisemitic attacks in Washington and Boulder, Colorado, are examples that leave those communities with psychological and political tolls, and a cost that could include loss of power long struggled for. This kind of toll is not felt by the mainstream Protestant community unless we confess our part in it.” (Presbyterian Outlook 7/11/25) READMORE>>>>

Biblical Ethics in a Divided Age: Learning from Herman Bavinck
Much of American political discourse is really about ethics. Based on the latest news cycle, debates flare up about topics like the use of excessive force by police, systemic causes of racial disparities, gender identity, and sexual abuse in the church. Tragically, contemporary political polarization often makes it hard for Christians to see ethical problems through a consistently biblical lens. That’s what makes the publication of Herman Bavinck’s Reformed Social Ethics: Perspectives on Society, Culture, State, Church, and the Kingdom of God so valuable. Though technology and circumstances have changed since Bavinck wrote, he was wrestling with many of the same basic questions that drive today’s political discourse. This volume complements the three volumes of Bavinck’s Reformed Ethics. It’s been compiled and edited by a team of translators led by John Bolt, professor emeritus of systematic theology at Calvin Theological Seminary. The content fills out notes that Bavinck left behind. It’s drawn from Bavinck’s writings and frequently embeds Bolt’s insight into Bavinck’s thinking about social ethics, which have been gleaned from decades of careful study.

Phillips Craig and Dean held a concert after lunch, and the keynote speaker, Shawn Boonstra from Voice of Prophecy, ended the evening with a final message...... Nevertheless, this seemed to be a meaningful weekend for those in attendance. A palpable buzz surrounded main speaker Shawn Boonstra's presence. Some of the younger attendees shared memories of growing up watching his sermons, while adults expressed admiration for his life in ministry, his recent assumption of and successful leadership for Voice of Prophecy. Boonstra's sermon, which aligned with the theme "Hope for Today,” included captivating stories from the mission field and encouraged attendees to find hope in Christ's imminent return. This message resonated well with the congregation. His engaging preaching style, filled with lightheartedness and dynamic stage presence, also kept the congregation captivated throughout.

As Jewish new year dawns, they're casting their regrets into the water
As rain came down Sunday evening and the typical Washington, D.C., sound of passing helicopters whoop-whooped overhead, dozens of Jewish young adults stood at the Tidal Basin with fistfuls of Cheerios, ready to spiritually tackle regrets the way Jews have done for centuries. The Cheerios are a modern twist, but since the Middle Ages Jews have been flinging breadcrumbs, scraps of paper or prayers into water on Rosh Hashanah, or the Jewish new year. The ritual is called Tashlich, which in Hebrew means “casting off,” and its open-ended combination of nature spirituality and self-improvement makes it one of the faith’s most popular and accessible practices. November 7, 2024: Bowdey posted at Daily Signal: What happened Tuesday was incredibly significant, he underscored. “It does restore hope in the American people that they realize the direction our country was going—and they rejected it. They don’t want the woke policies. They don’t want all this misunderstanding of gender and of loss of parental rights and a horrible economy and an open border and on and on and on. … [T]hey want more commonsense government. They want authentic leadership around the world, as well as right here in our own country. And I believe that message came through loud and clear.”

November 11, 2024: Bowdey: For all the talk of “self-reflection,” Democrats have obviously learned nothing from the shellacking they took at the ballot box. In the two weeks since Republicans swept the House, Senate, and White House, the only conclusion the Left seems to have come to is this: they’d rather lose elections than give sanity a single inch.

Conservative legal group aims to export its rightwing Christian mission beyond US borders
Alyssa Bowen, deputy executive director of True North Research, an investigative research watchdog, said ADF’s activities should be raising alarm bells for civil society in Europe and other regions. “Despite their PR claims, ADF’s foreign operations will use religious freedom not as a shield but as a sword to attack equal rights and to assail efforts to protect the fundamental rights and freedom of all people,” Bowen said. The ADF’s record, she claimed, of “attacking the rights of women, the LGBTQ+ community, and parents and teachers who support truth in public education” ought to be a lesson for other countries to impose limits on spending to influence elections and protect judges’ independence. The early Methodist movement had one goal, to spread Scriptural Holiness across the land. We are embracing our Methodist heritage by aligning with the Global Methodist Church.”

How the Black Church saved me from white evangelicalism There was a time when I almost lost myself trying to fit into white evangelical spaces that never were designed for me. These were spaces where I was preemptively labeled a “liberal” and my passion for racial justice was dismissed as a “distraction from the gospel.” Spaces where the Jesus of Scripture was supplanted by a white American Jesus. Spaces where affiliation with the Republican Party became a surrogate for biblical fidelity.I didn’t leave the faith, but I nearly let a distorted version of it strip me of my spiritual roots. I almost was deceived into believing the “white way” was the “right way” to be a Christian and to do church. (Joel Bowman; Baptist News Global 12/2/25) READMORE>>>> Joel Bowman
The Black Church offered me something white evangelicalism could not — holistic salvation.
Not only is the Black Church concerned with the saving of souls, but also the liberation of Black bodies from the shackles of oppression. It proclaims a gospel that refuses to divorce spiritual renewal from social responsibility. In the Black Church, salvation is not merely a moment of conversion; it is a lifelong journey toward personal and communal freedom. The Black Church also tends to the healing of the mind. It provides space where grief can be voiced, trauma can be acknowledged and resilience can be cultivated. In its worship, testimonies and preaching traditions, the Black Church teaches that our emotional and psychological well-being are sacred matters that God cares deeply about. --Joel Bowman; 12/2/25 How the Black Church saved me from white evangelicalism |

King’s daughter, Bernice A. King, has said some of her father’s quotes are “cherry-picked for convenience and comfort.” That is definitely true of the “I Have a Dream” speech.
The most often-repeated line of the speech is, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
In an opinion piece titled “The Whitewashing of MLK’s Legacy,” Kennith Woods said, “This singular statement has proven to be powerful and timeless — so much so, that King’s dream has largely overshadowed the rest of his speech and his life"
This statement by King has been grossly misappropriated by many on the right to forward a political agenda that is antithetical to King’s philosophy. Some right-wing pundits have misused this line from the speech to suggest King envisioned a “colorblind” America. This certainly was not the case. What King actually envisioned was an America where racial inequality would be eradicated. Others have misused this line from King’s speech to say he would have been against affirmative action and that he believed to “make it” in America, people just need to pull themselves up by their own “bootstraps.” This is patently false.
In a 1967 interview with NBC, King said, “It’s a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps. And many Negroes by the thousands and millions have been left bootless as a result of all of these years of oppression and as a result of a society that deliberately made his color a stigma and something worthless and degrading.”
Still others, like former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, have invoked King’s name while opposing those who organize to protest police brutality of Black bodies. -Rev Joel Bowman; Baptist News Global; More than a dream: The undiluted legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. 8/28.23

Rev Greg Boyle is the founder of Homeboy Industries, a program he started in the Dolores Mission Church in Los Angeles to reduce gang violence in his community in the 1980s, the so-called “decade of death.” It peaked with 1,000 gang-related killings in 1992. In 1988 Boyle and his parish started what would become Homeboy Industries, a program dedicated to providing a second chance to former gang members. Today, Homeboy Industries is a nonprofit that trains and employs former gang members and formerly incarcerated people in a dozen social enterprises, including a bakery, café and diner, food retail, catering, apparel and embroidery and electronics recycling. Yearly, it serves over 10,000 former gang members from across Los Angeles, not only through its job placement program but through services like case management, education, legal services, mental health services, substance abuse and tattoo removal.
March 10, 2023: Religion News: ‘Spiritual exemplars’ change the media narrative about religion
Scholars sometimes make the distinction between intrinsic and fundamentalist religion that is authoritarian. The exemplars we have studied fit the category of intrinsic religion. The Rev. Greg Boyle, a Catholic priest we profiled, measures all beliefs by whether they are loving, not whether they are part of the dogma of the church. This conviction guides the efforts of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention and prison reentry program in the world.
